From left to right: Ms. Alexis and her son ZXander (not legal spelling).
ZXander is spelled with both a capital Z and capital X together because although we have been spelling it with an X, he decided he wanted it to start with a Z. Then he changed his mind again and went back to starting with an X. So I have given up on going back and forth and will spell it with both until he is old enough to write it himself.
Hello everyone! I am Ms. Alexis Pflegl, though I usually just go by Ms. Alexis or Ms. Lexi (or Mrs./Ms./Miss Lex, Alexa, Alex, any other variation; I'm not picky). It's the name I went by when I started working at the Boys and Girls Club here at Rock Creek in 2013. Since then, the name has stuck.
Back when I attended elementary and middle school in San Francisco, my father would often substitute in the school library. Did I know I wanted to follow in his footsteps back then? No. But I always knew I wanted to work with children in a school setting. So after moving to Auburn and attending Placer High School, I went to Sierra College and began studying Early Childhood Education. However, once I started working at the Boys and Girls Club at the Rock Creek location, I realized I loved these students so much more. While working at BGC, I decided to get more involved with the school and became a Noon Duty Supervisor on my birthday in 2014: September 29th. And once the Library Technician job opened up, I made the decision to leave BGC to spend more time here at the school. I officially became the Library Technician one month before my son, ZXander, was born even though I had been substituting long before that. Since then, I have worked tirelessly to make the Rock Creek School Library a fun and exciting place to be.
Here's some more fun facts about me:
Our 2 cats, Neil and Geddy, are named after 2 of the 3 members of the band Rush - Geddy Lee and Neil Peart (R.I.P. January 7, 2020) - although that was not my decision. Their full names now are Sir Geddy Lee Pants and Doctor Lord Neil DeCatte Peart Tyson Tubbington, the Eternal Dragon.
My all-time favorite book series is the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, but if I had my way as a child, I never would have read the series. When I was in middle school, I refused to read it solely because it was popular. My father and I had a huge fight about it. He wanted me to read it but I did not want to. Eventually he told me to read just the first chapter and if I still didn't like it, then I'd never have to read it again. Well, it wouldn't be my all-time favorite series if I had only read the first chapter...
Reading, writing, and language arts were NOT my favorite subjects in school. I loved math and science classes the most. It wasn't until high school when I met my best friend that I really discovered the joy of getting lost in a book. I still have a reading problem these days; once I pick a book up, I can never put it down!
I love to cook, but have no clue how. I can never follow a recipe exactly the same way twice. Some of my favorite vegetables are zucchini, asparagus, and broccoli, and a new favorite I recently discovered: roasted red bell peppers.
Some of my favorite hobbies (besides reading, that is) include softball, crochet, crafting, building minor projects, making handmade gifts for others, and most recently, basic computer programming.
I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. I plan to keep learning and going back to school until the day I die. I am fascinated with learning languages, arts, engineering, writing, psychology, sciences, and anything that catches my eye.
I am currently enrolled at Sacramento City College to earn my degree in Library Information and Technology, and plan to continue on to a Masters Degree in Library Information Science and a Teaching Credential to become a Teacher Librarian.
